Emotional Support Animals
The federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in conjunction with the Department of Justice released
guidelines for Service Animals and Emotional Support Animals (ESA)
. The guidelines provide a step-by-step outline for how to handle a tenant request for an ESA - including when approval is appropriate and what grounds you may be able to deny a request.
The ESA related information begins on Page 8 of the document. It is recommended that Landlords review this information but speak with an attorney prior to denying a request for a reasonable accommodation.
